Thankful At Christmas

During the Christmas holidays, you get a chance to be with family a little bit more...I really enjoyed being with my family over the past few days and am looking forward to visting Jeanine's family in Ga next week (I am also looking forward to the cold weather... hopefully see some snow somewhere up there!).
Which leads me to other things to be grateful for... I was reminded today that Jesus is not the reason for the season, He is the reason for LIFE! I am thankful that we have a relationship with God through the saving work of His Son in our world...and I am thankful that He has allowed me to follow Him!
(Here is where the post gets really long!) I came across an email that I was sent around Thanksgiving day that has to do with being grateful... supposedly, it was written by Jay Leno, but the point is bigger then who wrote it... here it is...

"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some
poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true, given the source,
right?
The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with
the direction the country is headed, and 69 percent of the country is
unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence, 2/3's of the
citizenry just isn't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What are we so
unhappy about?''
Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer
and heating in the winter?
Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time, and
see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from
around the world is just not good enough.
Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic
Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move
through each state?
Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You
may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group
of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment
to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings.

Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a
burglar or prowler or intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest
will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.
This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias
raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of
teenagers own cell phones and computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we
enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.
Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the
world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a great disdain
for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in
the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have , and what
we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.
I know, I know. What about the President who took us into war and has
no plan to get us out? The President who has a measly 31 percent approval
rating? Is this the same President who guided the nation in the dark
days after 9/11? The President that cut taxes to bring an economy out of
recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in
the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe
from terrorist attacks?
The Commander-In Chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there
defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk
show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take
a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad?

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have
volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom.
There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go.
They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general''
discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case
scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off
the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your
bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is
exponentially more good than bad.
We are among the most blessed people on Earth, and should thank God
several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative."

Fireplace in South Florida

So, on Christmas, thanks to Channel 39 and sponsored by South Florida Honda dealers, we were able to open our gifts by a crackling fire...I had to imagine the smell of smoke in my head!

If only the fireplace was HI-DEF! How much awesomer would that have been?!

Something for Guy

I know he is enjoying a Tender Tennessee Christmas, but I think if I could buy him a house, it would be this one... it has Alabama Christmas and christmas lights...what more could he want (except maybe a Dunkin Donuts down the street??).

Ain't no party like a chipmunk party....

Cause a chipmunk party don't stop!

Had a great time at the Oasis staff Christmas party today...do other churches do this kind of stuff?

Lunch at Benihana...here are some pics from my chair...

Our chef, Hibachi guru, Saul...

Ben, John, and Pat on my right (and Mallika's hand!)

My brother Jonathan, Jimmy, and Felix on my left.

After lunch, headed over to Starbucks for a Tall Eggnog Latte...and read the newspaper and chatted with fellow ministry peeps...

Then, took off on a round-about, secretive trip to Regal Westfork to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks..."Please Christmas Don't Be Late" is still running through my head!

Thanks, Guy (and church council!), for a great party and thanks team for another great year... it is awesome serving and being in ministry with you guys!

Christmas in NoMi

I am getting pumped about this weekend in North Miami! We are having a block party and Christmas Eve services which you can read about here. Tonight we had a meeting to work on the details and I am looking forward to our party more then ever...

- We had already reserved a bounce house and rock wall, but after tonight, we now have another bounce house, a popcorn machine, and a sno-cone machine (thanks Eva and Rosemary!).

- I asked Vic if the church had a grill and he said, "No, we have two grills!" We found them in a closet, dusted them off, and fired the propane up...woohoo! Free hotdogs coming up!

- The Willix family said they love being part of events like this...and that fires me up!

- There is a good chance Santa Claus will show up at the block party! You never know...

Now, I am asking my blog friends and family to pray for good weather, people in the community to show up, and a chance to share the true meaning of Christmas in North Miami this week.

I will let you know how it goes... and if you want to join us for either event, come on down!

I love this weather!

On the way to work, my car readout said 55 degrees this morning! What a great day.!

Finally, winter is here in South Florida... I am even wearing a long sleeve shirt!

For all my friends and family who are living up North with ice and snow and freezing rain and parkas and snow shovels and warming up cars and below freezing temps... guys, come on down to South Florida!

55 degrees, winter is here.... and will be gone by Wednesday. Forecast is mid to upper 70's.

*That being said, I am still dreaming of a White Christmas! Wouldn't it be great if we had one day of snow each year in South Florida? That way, we could ski at the garbage dump (for those who don't know, they are the highest points in our area)!

A Christmas Story

Came across this interesting news story from Yahoo.com... just good to know that if the First Christmas were to happen again, our world would be prepared!

Hotel chain offers free rooms for Marys and Josephs at Christmas
Tue Dec 11, 2:53 PM ET
A hotel chain Tuesday said it was offering couples called Joseph and Mary in Britain, Ireland and Spain free accommodation this Christmas on proof of marriage and name.
Hotel chain Travelodge said husbands and wives matching their criteria would get a night's stay on the house, but with more home comforts than the humble stable of the Christian Nativity story.
The offer, appropriately, runs between Christmas Eve (December 24) to Twelfth Night (January 5, 2008).
"The phrase 'no room at the inn' is something that resonates with us in the hotel business," said Travelodge operations director Jason Cotta.
"Therefore this year we have decided to evoke the true spirit of Christmas and invite Mary and Joseph couples as our guests."
A Travelodge spokeswoman told AFP couples will have to be married and provide proof of identity and register their names at a special e-mail address.

I am in the process of making a big decision

This could be a decision that will change my life and the life of my family for years to come. I mean the change on me would be HUGE! You (and I, honestly) have no idea what this change will do to me!

In fact, to be honest, I am a little scared about this decision but the writing is on the wall... something must be done. And soon.

More on this in the near future... wait for it!

And no Guy, I am not talking about that.

Old School Video Game

Check it out... this is great!

Gotta love long meetings

Doing a little live blogging from a planned 4 hour meeting talking about 7 Nights of worship. These meetings are fun with lots of laughs since us guys on the pastoral team enjoy being together. It really makes a difference if you like and appreciate the people you work with!

However, it is also tiring and hard for me to keep focus on a specific task for this long! Thus, the reason I am blogging!

Some things to focus on this year is leader development, building teams deeper, working on tech issues, and marketing this idea more effectively.

I like what Kevin is calling this year...7 NOW 2.0

Finally!

Christmastime is finally here at the Higdons... Zach watches the "tree" fall out of the box...ah, nothing a fresh evergreen! It seems like Ryan is finally getting into a pattern that we can live with and get rest, and relax a little and find a few moments to blog...although from his perspective, he is finally getting us trained to meet his needs adequately! And finally Jeanine and I get to have a date later on today...woohoo!

Another thought rolling around my brain...

that builds on the previous post is this..."Am I willing to leave the known present and step into an uncertain future?". This statement is part of the message that Shauna Niequist challenged our church with during Radiance, a series on the book of Esther. We are focusing on the moment when she is challenged by Mordecai that perhaps God has allowed her to be queen "for such a time as this". (Esther 4:9 -16)

And so, this thought has stayed with me and I have been wrestling with it over the last few weeks. Am I willing to leave what I know and step out into the unknown, even though Christ is already there? Am I going to take a risk and leap of faith with my life, with my future, with my family? Am I willing to take a risk soon, especially since life is short?

So, now you know what I am thinking and praying about...what about you? Are you willing to leave a known present for an uncertain future? What if God is calling you to do exactly that?

What will we do? I do not want to look back on my life and regret I did not take more risks...

Sean Taylor

Yesterday was the funeral for Sean Taylor. In the past week of hearing about this story, I have had this recurring thought... "Life is unbelievably short". Of course I knew this idea (in fact it is in the Bible) when I heard about Sean, football player for the Redskins and the U. There he is at home, on his own, minding his own business, with his girlfriend and daughter. Robbers break in his house, he gets shot, and then dies the next day...He was 24 years old.

Life is unbelievably short...you have a dream to live, live it today. You have a chance to tell someone you love them, do it today. You get in an argument with someone, get it resolved today. You need to take a risk? Start taking it today.

You have one chance to be you...go for it! Don't wait.

Life is short.
